I’m so excited to share something special with you today! Friends, I helped design my sister’s kitchen! I often get asked for advice from friends and family, but to actually put it all together from start to finish is a first for me. This was a joy. So satisfying to help my sister, but also to see something transform in such a huge way. Makeovers around my own house have been purely cosmetic, but this, my friends- this was a total gut job.

To give you a little bit of background, my sister and her husband bought this 1960s home “as is.” It was in very rough condition. Making over this kitchen and dining area went beyond wanting to change the style of it. The cabinets doors were broken, there was mold, and they found exposed wires, to name a few challenges. A lot needed to be done to make it clean and safe for their family of four. I’m so impressed by my brother-in-law and the talented family who came to help do the big stuff. I got to come in at the end and do the fun job of making it pretty:)
The first place I thought of when shopping for flooring was Home Depot! Home Depot offers hundreds of DIY-friendly, click-lock flooring solutions (laminate, vinyl, hardwood and tile). The selection is fantastic, and after scrolling online, it was clear we found a winner for flooring and backsplash.

My sister wanted something a little unexpected. Something fun, but super cozy. Modern, but warm and welcoming. We opted for a patterned tile on the floors. It’s a 10×10 ft. kitchen, which, in my opinion, means a great space to pack a punch! The flooring is a ceramic tile by Merola, called The King’s Star Night. I love the charm this pattern adds! It almost reads as vintage since it has an already worn look to it. Perfect for hiding messes in a kitchen!

With the floor being a statement, I thought it was best to go with a clean, classic subway tile as a backsplash. What I love about the one we found at Home Depot, is that it’s slightly different than the typical 3×6 tile. It’s an elongated 3×12, and it has an amazing three dimensional quality to it. It’s imperfect and slightly wavy, and I love the way the light hits it to show off how cool it is.

Let me show you how this kitchen started! What I love to do with transformations as big as this, is alternate photos between a “before” photo and an “after” of the same view. That way you can really see the comparison of the same angles instead of scrolling up and down. Lol Without cheap cialis online further ado…

This sink has got to be one of my favorite changes. I used a BLANCO sink in my own kitchen makeover two years ago, and to this day, I’m obsessed with it. It’s huge and easy to maintain and just looks amazing. I love that my sister went for a black undermount. It’s so sleek! The faucet is also from BLANCO and we love the features.

Obsessed with these handmade wood shelves from Blissopia Furniture on Etsy! They’re a husband/wife team, and I have the same ones in my own kitchen! They’re SO beautifully crafted!

The Liberty Hardware pulls, also available at Home Depot, are such a cool statement. They’re classic black, and up close, the modern facets are evident when the light hits just right. The coolest!

Can we take a moment to focus on the lighting? You guys. Lighting is my favorite. Besides paint, there’s nothing that makes a bigger impact in a space. They’re the accessory that takes the whole outfit up a notch. These pieces from Hudson Valley Lighting, available at Home Depot, are just so good! The pieces in the kitchen are simple and modern- a great juxtaposition with the flooring we chose.

Ready to see the adjacent dining room? The chandelier in there is SO special! It casts the most magnificent pattern on the ceiling at night. It’s like one bright star, and I love that that mimics the flooring in the kitchen.

Is this not the cutest makeover ever? I’m so proud of it! It’s so fresh and happy. And what I love are the personal touches. My sister is the queen of nostalgia. I wanted this space to be less about purchases and more about the vintage pieces she already owned; pieces that were special to her. So, while all of the surfaces are fresh and new and downright awesome, there’s warmth to be felt in the handmade reclaimed wood shelving and the cutting boards; the used cookbooks and thrifted art; and the old pepper grinder of my mother’s and the silver spoon that once belonged to my brother-in-law’s grandmother. That’s the true beauty of interior design, and creating a home that tells your story. Surround yourself with things that make you happy!
Can’t thank the following sponsors enough for bringing this makeover to life:
Home Depot: Flooring and backsplash
Hudson Valley Lighting: Chandelier, wall sconces, pendant and flush mount
Handmade shelving: Blissopia Furniture on Etsy
Behr paint: Kitchen color is Shoelace, Dining Room is Campfire Ash, Cabinets are Bitter Sage
Liberty Hardware: Drawer pulls and cabinet knobs

Cheers,
This is seriously a remarkable transformation. Love the added character, whimsy and curated feel.
So kind! Thank you so much!
It is beautiful and PRACTICAL to live in! 🤸🏻
Big, fat could not have done this without you. It is so much more special just with you being apart of it. I love seeing these pictures and thinking of you being here to help with those finishing touches. And every single loved one who had a hand in any part of this, bringing it to life + making it a home. ♥️ Thank you for every little (and big!) thing you didn’t have to do.
I love you and your sweet family more than words. This brought me so much joy and I hope that’s exactly what this kitchen brings YOU! It’s amazing!
Also, VERY well done on the before and after photos! It drives me crazy to see people share transformations at totally different angles! 😂
Lol! SAME!
Did you roll or spray the cabinets? I love the color. I’ve got natural cherry cabinets I’d like to lighten up.
I just texted to ask her and her exact words were, “We used a brush because we’re cheap and like to torture ourselves.” Lol! I had cherry cabinets and had them professionally painted, and they sprayed them.
Sorry, one more question. Please tell me about the patio door drapes! Did you do grommet drapes so they could be quickly opened & closed? Why not clips or rings?
I had woven wood panels across my patio doors. But our dog destroyed one panel. Now I’m contemplating drapes. With kids I’m thinking they need to be washable.
Are your sister’s drapes washable? They look like velvet. So pretty!
Don’t apologize! I love questions! Those are indeed velvet and from Ikea.I will say I have velvet kitchen drapes as well and they’ve helped up fine with four kids and a dog 🙂
Wow, what a difference! Your sister must be over the moon! I love the floor tile and backslash! It’s all so beautiful. Nice work!
Thank you so much, Alia! She really is! And I love the tile too! So many great options at Home Depot!
It was such a treat to see this all come together. You have such an eye for detail, Haneen, and everything stayed true to Nadia and David’s style. The cabinet color is a show stopper! The black hardware against the green real pops. My personal favorites are the backsplash tile, floor tile and cute custom wood shelving! Wait, and the chandelier! It’s all marvelous!!!
Iman, THANK YOU! I’ll always remember this as a fun sister slumber party! Thank you for being there! I love all those details too!
What a beauty!! I love how you walked us through the choices you made. Amazing job!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you visiting!
This is absolutely perfect! You hit a home run! I so want to be able to create a space like this but I’m always missing something! You give me so many good ideas.
This is so nice of you to say! Thank you, Janeen!
That is the most beautiful shade of green. You knock it out of the park every single time. I know she will love being in that kitchen!
Love it all! The power of paint is amazing! From drab red to bright, creamy off white walls! Beautiful job! Love the rug in dining room. IKEA has a great selection of curtain panels! Love it all! The best part for me is you got to help your sister and that is so special!
Donna, that’s so sweet! That certainly WAS the best part for me too:) Thank you for visiting!
WOW, oh wow, oh wow….. I love the profile of those cabinets!!! I’m going to be re-door-ing (?) my cabinets soon, but I don’t like that plain shaker style of cabinet door that needs constant cleaning with a toothbrush! I love how the details slope out on your doors. Where can I get them?

Simply stunning!!!
Thank you so much, Sharon!! We’ll forever be thankful for all of your help! It really is a lovely transformation, isn’t it? Happy Holidays to you and your family!
What a beautiful, dreamy kitchen! I see the genetic green-team sister link here. 😏 The teal green and pumpkin in the dining room is charming and the transformation incredible. Love the juxtaposition of vintage and contemporary. I have that exact same cane sided burnt orange velvet chair! It was my husband’s grandmother’s, 1970s. Years ago I paint the frame cream and slipcovered it in griege crewel fabric(were drapes in another life)and it now resides in our granddaughter’s room. So sweet of you to assist your sister in making her dreams come true. Merry Christmas.
loving those green cabinets!! Can you share the paint brand and color you used?
