Painted Laundry Room Floor

I did something crazy. I painted our laundry room floor! If you recall, I redesigned our laundry room last summer. I absolutely LOVE how it turned out, but one thing I left untouched, was our dated grey vinyl floors…

If I was ever going to try painting a floor, this would be the place! It’s a second floor laundry with little to no traffic. Replacing the flooring is obviously an option, but just not at the top of our priority list right now (college tuition, anyone?) So I figured, why not?!

I’ve loved the classic look of checkered flooring (at a diagonal), so that’s exactly what I did… using FrogTape®!

Step one:

Clean the floor! I swiffered and wiped everything down.

Step two:

Tape off the baseboard. I used the yellow FrogTape®. It’s meant for sensitive surfaces. I thought that was best to use since the baseboards were painted, that way it wouldn’t pull paint with it. I used Sherwin Williams Pearly White on the floor. It’s the same color we used in our primary bathroom! I used their Duration line (just regular interior paint) that has primer mixed in. The baseboards and cabinets are Farrow & Ball Sudbury Yellow. I recommend peeling the tape off with the paint still a little bit wet.

Step three:

After the floor was dry, I used a square tile sample to trace the pattern on the floor. I used a floor seam to line it up, which helped!

Step four:

Tape off and paint the squares! You’ll have to tape up every other square at first, because one set of squares has to dry before you can peel the tape and re-tape the squares that are next to the ones that just dried.

Step five:

Peel the FrogTape® and tape the next set of squares.

Step six:

After all the tape is peeled and paint is dry, finish with a water-based sealer!

That was so much easier than I thought it would be, thanks to FrogTape®! And it made such a huge impact! I love how bright it is, and I especially love the pattern play- the striped ceiling, floral walls, and checkered floor:) Let me know if you have any questions!

Shop the laundry room…

Cheers

What type of paint did you use? Was it made specifically for vinyl?? Was it made specifically for floors??

Thank you so much! I think that’s why it took me so long to start! I was worried it would be an awful experience. Lol! But it actually wasn’t bad! 🙂

  3. Where did you find that accent chair in the corner? Very cool
