Transitioning to winter…

It’s gloomy and wet outside; weather that makes me feel restless and wanting to “do something.” Or snuggle. One of the two. But I went in the direction of accomplishing something today- something besides driving Book Fair money to my daughter because she forgot something for the millionth time in the past week. I think the school secretary and I should be on a first name basis by now.

Anyway, let’s get to what I tackled. I’ll start by saying orange is one of my favorite colors. Truly. I use it fequently throughout my home and I love it- until the holidays roll around. Then it drives me nuts. So I went about de-oranging my family room. I started with swapping out the orange quatrefoil patterned paper I had in these frames from this…

To this…

I found this neutral snowflake wrapping paper from Hobby Lobby and I think it’s pretty cute for the winter season! It goes adorably with my “Winter Wonderland” mantel that’s coming up in a future post. I found this pillow at Home Goods and I loved the texture of it. The stacked rattan ottomans are from Ikea. They’re usually in my living room, but I moved them over here to take the place of my orange stool from Target. I’m feeling better already. But with that said, I still had this ottoman to think about…

Home Goods featured this shot recently on their Instagram feed, which was awesome. I bought it there in grey and reupholstered it in this fun orange fabric from Calico Corners. That was a few years ago. So there I was, tired of orange, staring at one missing tufted button and a small stain or two, then looked across the room at a furry blanket I bought recently. Hmmmm. Yes, I’m going there. Carried the ottoman into the foyer for more space, along with the blanket and a staple gun, and got to work…

I started by laying the ottoman upside down on top of the blanket, and then cut off excess, leaving enough room to wrap the blanket underneath.

Oh, hey, look! I now have a fancy scarf. I kid… let’s get stapling!

When reupholstering something, always start in the center on one side, then go to the opposite side, tug it tight, and staple in the center there. Keep pulling and going to opposite ends of the ottoman so the tightness is evenly distributed.

So, the corners are tricky. I kinda winged it. I figured it’s totally temporary and I’m most likely going to rip it off after the holidays anyway. So I basically wrapped it around the corners and stapled what I could. When I reupholstered with the orange fabric, I was careful to cut more accurately and tucked everything in perfectly before stapling. It was much easier because the fabric was thin. A furry blanket, not so much.

I didn’t quite realize how “stripey” this blanket is! Can’t decide if it’s looking a little Liberace-esque! Lol If it bothers me enough, I’ll throw on a tray and do some styling. Easy peezy. It’s soft and neutral and perfect for winter. This guy loves it so much, he wouldn’t budge for a photo…
