Pattern and Color Mixing…

Hi, friends! So, some folks have suggested blogging how I go about mixing colors and patterns. Let’s chat about that, shall we? It’s my favorite thing ever. If you’re a rule follower, I may not be the person to ask. My “rule” is: Love it? Use it! If a room is composed of things/colors/patterns/textures you love, somehow it’ll all come together. I’ve said it before, I LOVE juxtapositions, which pretty much means I’m drawn to things that don’t typically “go” together. My daughters’ shared bedroom is a great example of pattern and color mixing…

These beds belonged to me and my sister when we were kids. My living room design won stencils through a contest put on by Royal Design Studio, so the first thing I thought to do was choose one pattern for the main wall, and another for the beds to bring them back to life. Once I browsed their site, I knew immediately I wanted a feminine, traditional lace pattern on the walls- reminded me of doilies my mom used to have on her coffee table. But nostalgia aside, I knew what was really going to make my heart go pitter patter was pairing it with a modern pattern on the beds. Chevron it was! Holy fun! I wanted bright. I wanted happy. That’s where the color came in. Does one typically think to throw yellow and pink together with pool blue bedding and pops of orange? Maybe not. But love went into this room, so for me it works! The replica of Van Gogh’s Starry Night that my husband did at age 8 is framed and up on the gallery wall. (Thank you, Mother-in-law, for letting me steal this from your house! Gives me warm fuzzies every time I see it because I painted a 30 ft. replica of the same painting to use as a backdrop to the head table at our wedding. It’s my fave.) The hand-knit blanket my mom made and gave to me at my baby shower is laying on one of the beds. My 3rd daughter’s birth announcement is also a part of the gallery wall. Who cares if she’s now 6? It’s got the cutest photo of her and her sisters! I found vintage artwork on Etsy of a little blonde and brunette jumping rope that I simply could not resist. It respresented these two perfectly. Everyone gets a chuckle out of me having 2 blondes with blue eyes and two brunettes with brown eyes. Ah, the wonders of genetics! It’s the coolest! I digress…

Feel free to email me with questions, or comment below. Just know I fully encourage you to find pieces that speak to you. Find patterns that speak to you. Find colors that speak to you. It’ll work, I promise! And remind yourself that your home is YOURS. Design it to make YOU happy. Not your friends, not the internet, not the future owners when you plan to sell it down the road. Here’s one last thing to keep in mind…
